Sandy Springs has 2 high schools, North Springs and Riverwood. Built in 1963, North Springs High School is getting renovations  Riverwood was built in 1971 and is getting a brand new state of the art school opening in 2018. Because Riverwood is getting a new state of the art school to the tune of $80 million dollars, it has created a very disparate educational experience for students in our city.  Riverwood students will be offered dynamic curriculums that North Springs can never offer with an old building.

Before each SPLOST election, Fulton County Schools hires a consulting firm to perform a Facility Condition Assessment Report and score each school to determine where & how money should be spent.  In 2010 North Springs received a score of 66 and Riverwood received a 78.  FCS chose to put renovation capital into North Springs while spending very little capital at Riverwood.  Five years later North Springs received a score of 85 and Riverwood a 64. Riverwood qualified for replacement.

The question begs why is FCS taking an ineffective band-aid approach with North Springs, while investing 90 million+ into a new school for Riverwood. Even with a new air conditioning, a new roof and other capital improvements, North Springs only meets the state minimum requirements while Riverwood will have all of the latest up to date ed specs and have a state of the art facility and equipment.  This is creating a very unequal educational experience for high school students in Sandy Springs.

Below are the reasons that FCS used to justify building a new school for Riverwood.    North Springs has the same issues.  Why is North Springs not getting a replacement school?  FCS will not say.

CLICK HERE to read the FCS Capital Report that shows the justifications for building a replacement school for Riverwood.  The problems identified in the report that qualified Riverwood for replacement are the same problems that North Springs currently has.  Why did the school board vote for their replacement? SEE THE INFORMATION BELOW.  It shows the justifications for a new Riverwood which are the same issues at North Springs.
